Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has sharply responded to former President Donald Trump after he mocked her Somali origins and questioned her involvement in American politics, describing Somalia as “a place with nothing — no police, no army, nothing.”
During an interview on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, Trump ridiculed the Democratic Party and took aim at Omar, saying,
“Look at this person from Somalia, a country that has nothing — no police, no military, nothing. All they have is crime. And then she comes here and tells us how to run our country. It’s insane.”
Omar, however, was unfazed by the attack. She quickly fired back on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Unlike you, I can actually read and write — that’s why I know what the Constitution says.”
Her response, which accompanied a clip from the interview, has been widely praised for its boldness and clarity.
Elected in 2018, Omar is now serving her fourth term in Congress, representing Minnesota’s 5th District. She fled Somalia’s civil war as a child and later became a U.S. citizen in 2000 at age 17 — making her the first Somali-American and one of the first Muslim women ever elected to Congress.
Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar and other women of color in Congress, telling them in previous statements to “go back to their countries.” In late September, while speaking in the Oval Office, Trump jokingly said he might “send Omar back to Somalia,” claiming he once told Somalia’s president, “Maybe you’d like to take her back,” to which he allegedly replied, “I don’t want her.”
When asked about Trump’s threats to revoke her citizenship, Omar dismissed the idea confidently:
“I’m not worried at all. I don’t know how they would revoke my citizenship or deport me. I’m not that eight-year-old who fled a war anymore. I’ve grown up, my children have grown up — I can live anywhere I choose.”
Meanwhile, the White House responded humorously by sharing a campaign photo of Trump waving at a McDonald’s drive-thru window — a subtle jab at his comments being unserious.
